Help your littles develop confidence in their reading abilities while having fun and learning about physical science at the same time!

I made these reading passages (with corresponding comprehension questions) with Kindergarten students in mind using the Flesch-Kincaid reading comprehension leveling formula. The passages range from .1 - 1.0 levels.
The kid-friendly font that is used in these passages makes reading the text even easier.

There are 10 passages included that teach students about the following topics:
-heat, magnets, solids, liquids, gases, force, motion, energy, matter, & properties
When I use these passages with my students, I introduce them by first asking what they know about the topic. This allows me to pulls as much back-ground information as I can so that I can base my direction and discussion around their prior knowledge.

I've found that some of my students tend to instantly shut down when seeing so many words together in one passage like this, so we break it down before reading so that they can see that they actually already know many of the words that they'll be reading.

First, we find out what the topic is about, and then highlight the topic word all throughout the passage with an orange crayon.
Then, we go back through the passage (not yet fully reading it) and highlight with yellow any high frequency words that we can find.

Finally, we notice that there is a word underlined, which probably means it's pretty important! So we highlight that one pink so that we can pay close attention to it.
After we've fully read the passage, we move on to the comprehension questions.
Sometimes I read these questions to the students, sometimes we read them together. If a student is able, I allow them to read the questions to me.
Many times, the students can recall the information needed to answer the question without going back to the passage. But if they don't know the answer, I guide them back to the passage and together we look to see if we can find the area that might give us the answer. Then we fill in a dot next to that question so that later, when I'm recording their data, I can remember that they needed help answering that question.

Here is what I record their data on:
Currently, I have five different Non-Fiction Reading Comprehension Packs. You can get them all in one bundle if you're interested, which allows you to save some money compared to purchasing them individually.

This St. Patrick's Day BINGO game will fit right in with the other activities and crafts you're doing with your Preschool, Kindergarten, or First Grade students. Whether used for a class party or for centers time, it will reinforce the high frequency words you've learned so far this year!
Since everyone was so interested in the Valentine's Day BINGO I share, I'd thought I'd better show you that there's a St. Patrick's Day one too! (And many other themes -click here- are available as well!)

Everyone loves playing BINGO! There's nothing more thrilling than placing that final chip on your card and yelling "BINGO!" As I've said before, BINGO and Heads Up Seven Up where my absolute favorite games to play when I was in elementary school. We mostly played BINGO in music class...it's how I learned the names of various music symbols! If we won, we got a Jolly Rancher-woot-woot!

This St. Patrick's Day themed BINGO includes 30 different game cards, each with its own Valentine's Day themed picture at the top. The shamrock picture in the middle serves as the FREE spot. Use green M&Ms, or pennies even, for your BINGO chips to make it even more fun!

The 42 oversized calling cards make it easy for students to read as you call each word. Reinforcing sight words even more!

These are the words included:

How did I choose which words would go with this game?
Well, I wanted it to be something that students who struggle with HFWs could still have a lot of fun with. So I decided to use the beginning & middle of the Kindergarten Fry list words. If you have students who are advanced with their sight words, give them a pieces of paper and let them use the word in a short sentence in between calls. Or have them write a word that rhymes with it. But most importantly, HAVE FUN when playing this game! It's not intended to frustrate anyone!

Get this game HERE.

Today I'm going to show you some of the best faith-based Easter activities that you can use with your littles during your Easter lessons. And one of them, you'll be able to download absolutely FREE!

This past Christmas, my brother and his girlfriend (now fiancé...whoop, whoop!) gave our four kids the book The Tale of the Three Trees. It's what I'd like to kick off my Easter lesson plans with this year. The book is a traditional folktale retold by Angela Elwell Hunt and illustrated by Tim Jonke.
The book tells the story about three trees that dreamed about what they wished they would become someday. One dreamed to hold treasure, one dreamed to be a strong sailing ship that carried powerful kings, and one dreamed to grow so tall that when people looked at it they would think of God. I won't spoil the story for you, you'll have to get the book and read it for yourself to see what happens! But it's a great segue into Easter that I highly recommend.

Then I'm going to have my students make their own Easter Emergent Reader to have, to hold, & to practice their reading skills with.

Here are what some of the pages of the reader look like:

There are 12 pages total that you can choose from to use.

When I use this book, we highlight and work on recognizing the word "Jesus" so you'll see that word on almost every page of the book.

I found some adorable story retelling pieces for the kids to use.

Another retelling option is to use an Easter Story Wheel.

Some of the other math and ELA activities that I'll use for some of my centers throughout our Easter unit come from my Easters Activities for Kids Pack. There are 65 pages total to print!

I'm not going to show you all of the 65 pages you can print, but I will highlight a few. The first ones I'll show you practice beginning, middle, (with short vowels) and end sounds. There are 6 total of these.

The next ones I'm going to show you practice skip counting by twos, fives, and tens.

Grab a ruler (or just let students eyeball it) and practice measuring to determine which disciple of Jesus is taller than the other in its group! Groups of three spears are also available to make it a slight bit more challenging!

Color words recognition practice is available with two different sheets. This Colorful Coins one (can someone tell my why on earth my daughter is holding her crayon like that?!)...

...and there is also another that is called Colorful Tombs.

Practice filling in missing numbers with this next one.
And the best part is that it goes up to 21 so that you can assess if your littles know what comes after twenty!

That's all that I'm going to show you here, but there is so much more that comes with it!
There are two more emergent readers (one based on counting and one on color word recognition), practice in counting syllables, ten frames and tally marks, Easter Story Flip Book, 3-piece puzzles for younger learners, and more!

You can get the entire pack here: Easters Activities for Kids Pack.

I found a few really cute ideas on Pinterest that I'd like to try this year. The first one uses very simple supplies that I already have (Yay for not having to buy anything!).

I like this next one too. Again...I have the supplies already!

One last thing I found and then I'll give you your FREE DOWNLOAD! I saw this pin and thought it would be very fun to break the kids up into teams and see if they can form the cross with their fingers! I'm even willing to get down on the ground to take that picture from below looking up if they can do it! I figure, I'll show them this picture and let them study it while they try!

Ok...are you ready?! (Of course you are!)
It's FREEBIE time!
You'll want to download this FREE Easter printable! It will go right along with the other activities you have planned for your Preschool, Kindergarten, or First Grade kids! It reflects on the moments Jesus had in the Garden of Gethsemane, while also reinforcing color word and number recognition at the same time.

Here is what it looks like in its entirety. I do want to point out that the next picture was taken before I realized that there were two 'brown' options...whoops! Don't worry, I promise it has been corrected for your download! I also added some more numbers to the resource (like in the guards legs and shirt sleeves).
